EntryLvlBread Book Club: 'Plastic'
So a funny thing happened while I was out of town last week. I was visiting a local bookstore, right? And there was this one book in the paperback section with a cover that rubbed me the wrong way at first glance, like any eye-catching cover ought to these days. Big pink lettering framing an outline of a house, with a shiny pink woman sitting inside. It was the newly-published novel Plastic by Scott Guild. I was there with my sister. While she was busy with something else, I flipped over to the back cover. I assumed it was some kind of dystopian commentary on American society and also climate change. The back cover told me just that, but it also told me that the main character is… the main character is literally a living plastic figurine girl. Every single character, actually, is some kind of living plastic figurine. There’s plot reasons for this… maybe… I stuffed that thing back onto the shelf and stepped away. At this point, I was frankly unreasonably upset. Not at Mr. Scott Guild
